James Spearheads Projects in Zambia

Cranleigh Rotarian James Phiri continues to spearhead a number of development projects in Zambia. Here is his latest report:

 1. Chilubi Island Health Centre
This remote centre is on an Island, some 68km from land on Lake Bangweulu in the Northern province of Zambia. The lake itself is some 800km from the capital, Lusaka.

One trial container of medical equipment has been sent to Zambia and the customs problem sorted out.  We are expecting more medical supplies from Swansea for the container to Chilubi. The container itself has been paid for and warehouse space has been obtained in Cranleigh. More equipment is wanted (eg from care homes).

2. Rotary Eye Hospital
The Zambian Ministry of Health will support the project, in collaboration with Global Sight Solutions. The current challenge remains finding a suitable, separate building.

3. Rotary Jaipur Limb
The Lusaka Rotary Club of Maluba has agreed to be the lead club on this project. The hospital submitted a Needs Assessment Report. I shall then communicate with the Chair of the Rotary Jaipur Limb project and seek his guidance on the next steps.

4. The Virtual Doctors Project
We had a highly successful fundraising event for the Virtual Doctors and a speech was delivered by the Permanent Secretary to the Zambian Government’s Cabinet. We are now working with Child Fund on potential funding for 28 new sites as a pilot for their support.
