Rotary Young Musician 2013 R Sutton

Twelve vocalists and musicians from Surrey and Sussex took part in thhe District Final of the Rotary Young Musician 2013 Contest, held in the Cranleigh Baptist Church on Saturday, 2 March. Sponsored by Clubs from Rotary District 1250, each competitor had to present two pieces for the team of judges to adjudicate. 

After a tense wait whilst the judges deliberated, the winner of the Vocalist Section was named as Hana Beckwith from Millais School in Horsham, with Anya Murphy from Godalming as the runner up. In the Instrumental Section, the winner was pianist Rosie Sutton from Millais School in Horsham, with Laura MacDonald, a cellist from Godalming, as the runner up.

The two winners each received a trophy and a gift voucher for £25, and the runners up received a trophy and a voucher for £15. These were presented by Rotary District Governor Elect, Michael Goodridge. The four chosen competitors will go on to take part in the Regional Final, which will be held in Old Coulsdon on 6 April.

The three judges were David Hansell, until recently Director of Music at Putney High school and formerly Director of Music at Cranleigh School; John Parsons, a talented violinist and Head of Strings at Charterhouse School; and Geoffrey Field, a prize-winning musician and choirmaster who is currently Director of Music at St Catherine’s School in Bramley.
