Centenary Plaque Unveiled

100 yearsA brass plaque explaining the history of Stocklund Square has been unveiled by members of Cranleigh Rotary Club. The plaque is part of a series of events and initiatives to commemorate the founding of Rotary International by a group of businessmen in Chicago exactly 100 years ago. The inscription on the plaque reads:

“Celebrating Rotary International Centenary 1905 - 2005. This area, now known as Stocklund Square, stands on the site of the former Cranleigh railway station and goods yard. This station, on the line running from Guildford to Horsham, was opened in October 1865 and closed almost exactly 100 years later, in June 1965. Cranleigh Rotary Club was chartered on May 28th 1970.”
